OPS board member Tony Vargas to seek South Omaha seat in Legislature

Tony Vargas, a member of the Omaha school board, will run for the District 7 seat in the Legislature.

Vargas, a registered Democrat, is seeking the South Omaha seat held by State Sen. Nicole Fox. Gov. Pete Ricketts appointed Fox to the position in August after Jeremy Nordquist resigned to take a job in Washington, D.C.

Fox, who will serve out the final year of Nordquist’s term, has said she will run for the seat in 2016. Former State Sen. John Synowiecki also has declared his candidacy. Fox is a Republican. Synowiecki is a Democrat.

Vargas, 31, was appointed to the OPS board in 2013. The son of Peruvian immigrants is a former teacher who now works as an education consultant.

In addition to education issues, Vargas said he would work to improve the economic circumstances of his district.

“I’m interested in building skill development and creating more jobs by supporting small businesses,” he said.

In addition to South Omaha, District 7 includes parts of downtown.
